Chapter Nineteen

“You can’t be serious.” Daniil didn’t even bother to soften his tone. He’d had enough bullshit for one day. Now Dr. Willis was feeding him some more. “Can she even do that?”

“Yes. She can.”

The doctor stood in the exam room with her hands folded primly before her and a serene expression on her face. The woman was extremely plain and unassuming, but Daniil had always sensed a backbone of steel beneath the white lab coat. That and Dr. Willis had always seemed rather partial to Hayley. It was something Daniil had noticed with just about anyone Hayley came into contact with. People couldn’t help but like her. Even Felix…

Which brought Daniil back around to this moment. “How is it that the woman can suddenly change her mind about a surrogacy agreement that has been in effect? She’s carrying my child. Not hers. Mine.”

“Normally, that would be the case,” Dr. Willis agreed. “However, you chose not to purchase a frozen embryo from a third party. The child Ms. Pearce is carrying is also her own. And she has a right to say if she has concerns about the child’s welfare in the home situation you intend to provide after the birth takes place and the surrogacy contract is over.”

“Concerns?” Daniil was highly insulted. “I would never harm a child!”

“No. But Ms. Pearce has just been through a very traumatic situation because of your occupation, Mr. Malchichov. She feels that it is in the best interest of the child to remain separate from all contact that would cause the child to become a target of your unsavory business associates.”

“My associates…” Daniil’s voice trailed off as he realized exactly how much damage he had done. “She thinks my associates would harm a child?”

Now Dr. Willis was looking almost sarcastic. “Mr. Malchichov, Hayley—Ms. Pearce—described to me the situation in which she found herself yesterday. Not only did that man—your associate—take her hostage, he attempted to pay her to abort her unborn child. Do you have any idea how traumatic that is to a regular person? Hayley is just a woman. She did not grow up within your organization. She does not have the understanding of the little political games the lot of you play with each other. She is trying to protect a child in the only way she knows how. And at this point, the legal system is on her side.”

“The legal system,” Daniil said, deadly quiet. “You know better than anyone else what it will cost you if you compromise me in a legal sense.”

“Then I suggest you walk away, because I have absolutely no control over Hayley. Nor do you. If you fight her on this, she will have no choice but to retain legal counsel. And I suspect the first thing any decent lawyer would do would be to contact the FBI and make a deal. Remove you, remove the problem, Hayley wins. Do you see where I’m going with this?”

“Your meaning is crystal clear,” Daniil said coldly.

He watched the doctor, wondering what was really going on behind the calm facade.
